Teaching Philosophy

Learner-Centered Environment
This is a trend in education field. I personally believe that this model will work better than the traditional one. In this model, students are not passive learner anymore. They are active participants in different kind learning activities. They are provided with opportunities to discuss with peers, express their opinions. They need to learn how to analyze information, solve problems. Teachers in this model become guides or facilitators. They design and plan activities for students to learn how to think, evaluate evidence and most of all how to collaborate with other people.

Teach 21st Century Skills
According to ACTFL 21st Century Skills Map, language learners today need to learn how to use the language in three modes: interpersonal, interpretational and presentational. Students are also expected to be able to use the language beyond the classroom. The skills map also lists some other important skills like collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, information literacy, technology literacy, flexibility and adaptability, initiative and self-direction, social and cross-cultural skills. I believe that all these skills are very important and I would like to use this 21st Century Skills Map as a guide to teach my students.

Content-based Instruction
Students learn best when the content is meaningful to them. I remember that my students learned quickly a song from movie "Frozen" , because they like the movie, they sang the song every day. So when I introduced the Chinese version, they all got excited and sang along.Content-based instruction is an efficient way to teach a language. A teacher can design different learning activities around the same content. Students will acquire the language skills through repetition and practice.

Integrate Culture into Language Learning
Language cannot be separated from culture. When you learn a foreign language, you already connect yourself to the culture of that language. My students learn best about the Chinese New Year and the Moon Festival by celebrating it. They relate the dragon boat to the story they heard in the classroom when they attended the Dragon Boat Festival and saw the dragon boat race. They play with Chinese toys and ask me about elementary school life in Taiwan. They have fun using chopsticks to pick up marbles.

Create Lifelong Learners
in modern society, life-long learning is a necessity. I love to learn and I learn new things every day. I would like to share this joy of learning with my students and help them become life-long learners. I will do my best create opportunities for my students to learn to communicate effectively, take responsibility for their own learning, contribute to society, work collaboratively and process information.
